Principles of Aquatic Massage Therapy
Aquatic Massage Therapy is a passive therapeutic treatment which utilizes the low gravity provided by hydrostatic pressure from the warm water (body temperature) environment of a therapeutic pool. For many types of treatment, it is more suitable than land-based therapies because the client's body is supported and relaxed by the water. The therapeutic movements are subtle and use a variety of techniques such as Range-of-Motion exercises, rehabilitation exercises, massage techniques: including trigger point, shiatsu stretch techniques, reflexology and cranio-sacral techniques, translated to the medium of water.
The Aquatic Massage treatment provides the recipient a complete body support with correct spinal alignment allowing for a relaxation of muscles, joints and mind. The treatment is experienced as a sequence of effortless movements with the cadence of a slow waltz or ballet where both the therapy and the therapist are virtually invisible to the client. The client can experience a deep meditative response which allows the therapist to do the body work with little mental resistance.
