Since November 2002, The Waters has provided post graduate training in Aquatic
Massage Therapy to licensed therapists who are interested in transferring and
expanding their land-based skills to the water. The principles and techniques provided
in this course complies with the guidelines of the College of Massage Therapists of
Ontario under the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. Continuing Education Units
(C.E.U.s) are provided for all completed courses.
The Aquatic Massage Therapy presented in this course is intended for use in Ontario
and is a hybrid of techniques. Most notably, it derives principles from:
- WATSU, created by Harold Dull in the early 1980s and the author of the book WATSU
Freeing the Body in Water ( copyright 1993, 1997) and
- Jahara Technique, the work of one of Dull's students, Mario Jahara.
Both of these men actively teach and promote their techniques today. The Aquatic
Massage Therapy being presented in this course has influences from their work and is
significantly different. The most notable differences and additions are as follows:
- Aquatic Massage Therapy is a Massage technique that takes land-based massage
therapy techniques and translates them to water.
- It is touch appropriate
- It is bio-mechanically safe for the client to receive and the therapist to give
- It is treatment-oriented
- It can be provided under scope of practice of Massage Therapists in the Province of
Ontario and therefore a receipt can be provided for insurance reimbursement.
- Advanced Courses and Instructor Certification can be scheduled by private
arrangement.
