Principles of Aquatic Massage Therapy
In 1999, the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario reviewed Aquatic Massage Therapy as a modality under scope of practice. The College determined that Aquatic Massage Therapy based on the principles and techniques developed by The Waters can be provided under scope of practice of Massage Therapists in the Province of Ontario and receipts can be provided for insurance reimbursement.
The Aquatic Massage Therapy developed by The Waters and provided by its certified therapists is intended for use in Ontario and is a hybrid of techniques. Most notably, it derives principles from:
  • WATSU, created by Harold Dull in the early 1980s and the author of the book WATSU Freeing the Body in Water (copyright 1993, 1997) and
  • Jahara Technique, the work of one of Dull’s students, Mario Jahara.

Both of these men actively teach and promote their techniques today. Aquatic Massage Therapy has influences from their work and is significantly different. The most notable differences and additions are as follows:

  • Aquatic Massage Therapy is a Massage technique that takes land-based massage therapy techniques and translates them to water.
    • It is touch appropriate
    • It is bio-mechanically safe for the client to receive and the therapist to give
    • It is treatment-oriented
  • It can be provided under scope of practice of Massage Therapists in the Province of Ontario and therefore a receipt can be provided for insurance reimbursement.
